Süleymaniye Trolleybus Power Center - Pre-renovation

Photographer

2020

Constructed in 1910, this building served as the power center for trolleybuses in Istanbul until 1984. Since then, the building stayed abandoned until its renovation. The photographs are taken before the renovation to create an archive for this industrial heritage site.

I was invited to document this building before its renovation by the chief restoration architect. I was amazed by this building's state of abandonment. Inside was a big open hall with no walls. One might assume it would be easy and fast to document a place that is not a spatial playground. I do not remember how much time I spent in this building, capturing details, decays, materials and traces from its industrial past. While leaving myself to float in this building, I just hoped it was not putting the architect on hold for more than he was expecting.
