Mecidiyeköy Former Liquor Factory / Pilevneli Gallery
Photographer
2020
Designed by French architect Robert Mallet-Stevens, constructed in 1930, this liquor factory played an important role in nationalizing liquor production. The building is located in Mecidiyeköy, that used to be on the outskirts of Istanbul and not highly populated. The gardens and fields surrounding the building served as one of the primary resources for fruits that were used in the production.
Due to the relocation of the production, in 2000, the building lost its function. Within the decision of its functioning, EAA designed a project to be constructed. The building was demolished and rebuilt based on the archives. In 2018, with the completion of the building, it started functioning as an art gallery.
When I was invited to create this series of photographs, I was quite excited to experience how the building was transformed. I spent hours photographing both interior and exterior of the building. However, to be honest, I enjoyed capturing the exterior most as I could feel and imagine the liquor factory better. Inside was only an exhibition area, where could not feel connected to the past of the building, despite the presence of its industrial look.
